What is Passport?
A passport is an official document which ensures smooth immigration into another country. It also doubles up as an authentic official document, helping us to avail various government and private services as it acts as an address and identity proof.
While the passport application process is an exhaustive one, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has made arrangement for quick dispensation of passports under the ‘Tatkaal scheme’. Known as Tatkaal passports, applicants needing to travel abroad urgently can apply for and receive their passport within a few days.

If you were age 16 or older when your passport was issued, your passport is valid for 10 years. If you were under 16 when your passport was issued, your passport is valid for 5 years. The Issue Date of your passport can be found on the data page of your passport book or on the front of your passport card.

Tatkaal Scheme Eligibility
The jurisdictional passport office has the final say for issuance of passports under this scheme. This would depend on the urgency coupled with other compelling factors of the applicant. Applicants falling in the category below cannot apply/reapply for a passport under the Tatkaal scheme.

•  Indian citizens who’ve been granted citizenship status on the basis of naturalization/registration

Documents required for a fresh passport
Proof of Address
- Photo passbook of running bank account in any public sector bank, private sector bank and regional rural banks
- Water bill.
- Election Photo ID card.
- Landline or Postpaid mobile bill.
- Proof of Gas Connection.
- Election Photo ID card.
- Spouse’s passport copy (First and last page of the passport that includes the details of the family and mentions applicants name as spouse of the passport holder).
- Certificate from Employer of reputed companies on letter head.
- Income Tax Assessment Order.
- Aadhaar card.
- Electricity Bill.
- Rent agreement.
Proof of Age
- School leaving certificate/ Secondary school leaving certificate.
- Birth certificate issued by the Registrar of Births and Deaths or the Municipal Corporation or any other prescribed authority that has been empowered under the Registration of Birth and Deaths Act, 1969.
- Declaration given by the Head of the Orphanage/Child Care Home on the official letterhead confirming the date of birth of the applicant.
- Policy Bond issued by the Public Life Insurance Corporations/Companies which contains the date of birth of the holder.
- Extract of the service record of the applicant (in case of government servants) or Pay Pension Order (retired government servants) that is duly attested/certified by the officer/in-charge of the Administration of the concerned Ministry/department of the applicant.
- Driving license.
- PAN card
- Election Photo Identity Card.
- Aadhaar card or e-Aadhaar.
Documents required for minors fresh passport
- Parents original and self-attested copies of the passport should be carried
- Proof of current address in the parent's name
- Photo passbook of running bank account in any public sector bank, private sector bank and regional rural banks
- Birth certificate
- Policy Bond issued by the Public Life Insurance Corporations/Companies having the DOB of the holder of the insurance policy
- Aadhaar card or e-Aadhaar
- PAN Card
- School leaving certificate/ Secondary school leaving certificate
- School or university 10th standard mark’s card

Documents required for re-issue of passport

• The first two and last two pages
• ECR/Non-ECR page
• Page of validity extension (if any)
• Page of observation (if any) made by Passport Issuing Authority
• No Objection Certificate (NOC)/Prior Intimation Letter (PI)

1. Police Verification is required on a Post-Passport Issuance basis.
2. Police Verification is required on Pre-Passport Issuance basis.
Depending on whether an application is for issue of fresh passport or re-issue of passport, Passport Office (PO) shall decide whether Police Verification is required for issuance of Passport to you. In most cases, of issue of fresh passport, pre-police verification would be required, exception being Government servants on submission of 'Identity Certificate' as per Annexure 'A'.
If your age is below 18 years, you must submit any two document from List of Acceptable Documents . The general rules, regulations and procedures pertaining to issue of passports as stipulated in Passports Act and Passports Rule would apply.
